Shadow and light, high and low, round and angled, up and down, open and closed...we understand one only in relationship to the other.
One time when we were at a film conference at our university the speaker, Scott Derrikson, spoke of how his films focused on darkness in order to reveal light. This idea has stuck with us throughout the years. We often find ourselves drawn to films that deal with difficult issues and flawed characters revealing the need for beauty and goodness.
Recently we have been watching stories of people on epic journeys, climbing mountains, traversing deserts and immigrating to new lands. Films that have shown that getting to the top of the mountain or crossing the ocean doesn't mean the journey is over. When one goes up, one must come down, they can only be fully experienced together.
As each person goes through life the contrasts surround and envelop us. We experience joy and sorrow in one day. Laughter is followed by tears. Pain and ecstasy can come simultaneously.
These photos are our look at the idea of the journey through light and darkeness.
